Our Commitment to Sustainability

As an independent publisher, we have both opportunities and responsibilities.
One of our earliest agreed core values was to “leave the planet in a better place than which we found it”. While this is a simple sentence, living up to the sentiment requires ongoing commitment.
In 2019, we began looking for an environmental partner whose work could complement our monthly charitable giving. We wanted a relationship that was visible, interactive and sustainable for the long term. It was during that search that, our director, Jamie Kinnear, came across Trees for Life, while browsing the weekend papers. He brought their work to the team, and his idea was met with immediate enthusiasm!
Trees for Life
Trees for Life are rewilding the Scottish Highlands. Based in Dundreggan, at the southern end of Loch Ness, they are running a 30-year project to repopulate the Caledonian Forest with original species such as Pine and Juniper. Their work also extends to wildlife, with beavers in the process of being reintroduced and future consideration given to specied such as lynx and tauros cattle.
Since January 2020, The History Press has pledged to plant one tree for every new book we publish. To date, we have planted more than 500 trees through our ongoing support of Trees for Life as a Juniper Partner. Our books carry their logo, helping to promote their work to a wider audience.

Dundreggan Rewilding Centre
Opened in April 2023, the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre provides a world-class, environmentally sensitive space that serves as a gateway to the wider landscape.
Our colleagues visited earlier this summer and described the shop as “a lovely environment, employing local people and offering excellent educational facilities.”

The Future
Our grove is dedicated with the words: “to make sure history has a future,”
We are proud to continue our partnership with Trees for Life, working together on a journey to leave the planet in a better place than we found it.
