With its frontline role during successive invasions by Saxons and Danes, and with links to royalty, the early Church, the foundations of British academia and the victorious RAF of the Second World War, Lincolnshire has taken a front seat on the rollercoaster of English history. With ancient rural traditions and agriculture on one hand and groundbreaking technological innovation on the other, it is a county for all seasons. Lincolnshire has made the world a better place, being the home of some of the country’s leading authors, composers, clerics, scientists, politicians and sportspeople. It has also made the world a bloodier place, being a dangerous borderland between feuding Celtic, Saxon and Viking kingdoms, and the site of some of the most lethal bomb raids during the two world wars. This book charts the county’s amazing history, with strange-but-true anecdotes and characters from the last 2,000 years, and tales from all the county’s major towns, villages, fens, wolds and fields.

The Little History of Lancashire covers the historic county which used to stretch from Coniston Water in the Lake District in the north to the River Mersey in the south. From the formation of the county’s terrain in the Ice Age and its earliest occupation by the Celts, we enter history with the Roman occupation. The Normans arrived to form the county that played a major part in the turbulent period of the civil war. The Georgian and Victorian periods saw the Industrial Revolution in Lancashire shape the future of the country and beyond. Lancashire became the most important manufacturing and exporting centre in the land. But the rise of king cotton and its fall led to a traumatic outcome and the present day. All these themes are highlighted in an easy to read, concise and entertaining narrative which helps you to understand the historical importance of the county.

Galway has a long and fascinating history. Today, it is home to over 250,000 people and plays host to over a million tourists per year, many coming to admire the scenery and to learn about the culture and history of this beautiful place. But it has not always been so tranquil and The Little History of Galway will look at the struggles of the earliest people – the arrival of the Normans and their conquest of the city and the siege of Galway by the feared Oliver Cromwell and his army.

It will also examine pivotal moments such as the Penal Laws, the Famine and the War of Independence and how they affected the local people. The book will also tell the story of the writers, artists and thinkers that have called Galway home, as well as the local people who have worked hard over generations to make Galway the beautiful and welcoming place that it is today.

Throughout its existence, Glasgow has been a city of great complexity. From its tentative origins, under the watchful eye of St Mungo, Glasgow grew from the serene ‘Dear Green Place’ into a bustling trading hub that boomed during the Industrial Revolution and growth of the British Empire. At its peak, Glasgow was a place of unlimited opportunity and wealth creation throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Flip that coin, though, and the city’s streets were home to mass poverty, crime and slum living. In recent decades, these streets – exuding Victorian fortitude still – have provided for and encouraged an inexhaustible line of talented creatives who have left powerful marks of their own on Glasgow’s story.

Through the eyes of a local, The Little History of Glasgow explores the city’s slow and steady economic rise, its calamitous collapse and its 21st-century reinvention as one of Europe’s most characterful cities.

Sussex may be a comparatively narrow county from north to south but it includes a huge wealth of history. The Little History of Sussex is much the same – it packs a whole lot of history into a relatively small book.

From prehistory to the present, this historic county provides reminders of our earliest ancestors and its past as a battleground for the Vikings. Whether being the gateway for the Normans, a playground for princely playboys or a home to holidaymakers, the people of Sussex have seen it all. This means it’s not surprising the county still today contains residents who, at times, very much ‘wunt be druv!’.

The Little History of Sussex covers the county’s history in a swift, engaging and lively sweep for those who like their history fresh, funny and full of intrigue.

Here in the pages of this compact little book are thousands of years history about a county which has many stories to tell, all laid out in an informative but easy-to-read way. From Roman times when three roads traversed its landscape, to its involvement in the Civil War, Worcestershire has seen it all.

The county’s people, who were employed in the coal mines and iron foundries of the north, in the salt works of Droitwich, who made nails in Bromsgrove, needles in Redditch and carpets in Kidderminster, all have tales to share. Some played a part in historic events: two brothers travelled to a new life on the Mayflower and three brothers were involved in the Gunpowder Plot. Worcestershire is also home to well-known politicians, musicians and poets. They all contributed to the story of Worcestershire and can be found in the pages of this ‘little history’.
